Breed: Estrela Mountain Dog
Breed Group: Pastoral
Appearance: An extra large, hardy dog of two coat varieties, Long coat: thick, harsh outer coat, with dense, paler undercoat. Short coat: Short, straight, harsh and thick with a shorter dense undercoat. Originally bred as a guard dog to protect sheep from wolves. Loyal, affectionate, can be strong willed and stubborn. Good with children. Requires a moderate amount of exercise and moderate grooming. An approximate lifespan of around 10 to 12 years.
Head: A broad, powerful, reasonably long head with a tapered muzzle, well opened nostrils and a black nose.
Eyes: Eyes of medium size, oval in shape, amber to dark in colour.
Ears: Small, reasonably high set ears, triangular in shape with rounded tips.
Mouth: Strong jaws and teeth with a complete scissor bite.
Neck: Neck short, muscular and well set on, with a hard, thick tuft of hair under throat.
Forequarters: Well muscled, straight forelegs with strong round bone and short pasterns.
Body: A reasonably short back with broad, well muscled loins. Chest deep and broad, well sprung ribs.
Hindquarters: Well muscled thighs with hocks well let down.
Feet: Feet oval in shape, with thick, hard pads and tightly closed toes. Nails dark.
Tail: Tail low set, reaching to the hock with a distinctive hook at the tip.
Gait movement: Free and easy purposeful jog trot.
Coat: Two coat types:- Long coat: Thick, harsh outer coat, with a dense, paler undercoat. Short Coat:- Short, thick, harsh and straight with a shorter dense undercoat.
Colour: Fawn, brindle, or wolf grey with black muzzle or mask.
Height: from 65 to 72cm (Dogs) 62 to 68cm (Bitches)
