Puppies for sale
Do’s and Don’ts of Buying a Puppy for Sale

When you have decided on the breed of puppy you wish to buy, probably the first thing you would do is to check out the Puppies for Sale in the local press. This can be risky. Although the majority of people advertising puppies for sale are genuine, reputable breeders, there is a small minority of unreputable people about, these are usually puppy farmers looking to make money from the sale of many different breeds of puppies, just bred indiscriminately for the pet market, their interest in this activity is motivated purely by financial greed.

When you ring up about a particular litter of puppies for sale, do not be afraid to ask as many questions as you can. All reputable breeders are happy to answer numerous questions to ensure that their puppies for sale go to the right homes. A few examples of questions you may wish to ask are:-

Are the puppies for sale Kennel Club Registered and full pedigree?
Were the puppies vet checked at birth?
How old are the puppies?
How many puppies were in the litter?
How many litters has the dam of this litter had?
Are both parents able to be seen?
Have both parents had all health check requirements and recommendations for their particular breed?
Have the puppies been wormed regularly?
Have the puppies been vaccinated?
Does the breeder give a diet sheet and after care information with each puppy for sale?

When you are satisfied that you have the right answers to these questions you may wish to make an appointment to view the puppies for sale.

If the person you are dealing with tells you that there are no papers with the litter of puppies for sale, be very aware, or if you are told that the relevant papers will be sent on to you, do not fall for it. Kennel Club registrations take a maximum of ten days to be processed and reputable breeders will ensure that they have sent for these documents in plenty of time before their puppies are due to be sold.

When viewing the puppies for sale make sure that they all look healthy and alert, and that they are living in a clean, warm environment. Do ask to look at the dam and sire of the puppies for sale if possible; this will give you an insight as to how your new puppy will look when it is fully grown.

Do ask to look at the pedigree and KC documents of the sire and dam, together with the relevant documents of the puppies for sale. Don’t be tempted to take a new puppy home at anything less than eight weeks old.

It is important that you never feel pressurised into purchasing a puppy for sale and that you feel that at any time after the purchase of your chosen puppy you will benefit from the help and advice of the breeder for the rest of your puppy’s life.
